John 3:16 has been called the “Golden Text” of Scripture. It is the entire Gospel encapsulated in one verse; a summation of God’s plan for man. It is one of the most popular verses of the Bible, frequently seen and cited at sporting events, and elsewhere. But, what is so significant about the verse? Let’s look into the individual parts of the text and see what we can learn.
- FOR – This word ties the verse to the statements made in the previous verses (vv. 14-15) about “whoever believes in Him” and the “lifting up of the Son of man.” It gives the purpose that literally “all who believe in Him might have eternal life.”
- GOD – Here is the subject of the clause – the One who performs an action, or governs the verb of the sentence. This is a verse primarily about God. It is focusing on what God has done.
- SO – Is a from a Greek word meaning “in this manner.” It conveys how God loved the world as well as to what degree of His love. In other words, God must really love us to do what He did for us.
- LOVED – This is the Greek word “agape,” which is love given without return (see 1 John 4:9,10). It was unconditional love that is given, even while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8).
- THE WORLD – Here is the direct object of God’s love. In John’s Gospel account, “the world” is that group of persons who have no fellowship with God (John 1:10,29; 3:17; 12:31; 15:19; cf. 1 John 2:15-17). Thus, this is God reaching out to the lost. Why would you and I be considered lost? Because of sin. Sin makes us impure and unholy.
- THAT HE GAVE – This is love in action (1 John 3:16; 4:9,10). Because He loved, He did something about it. His giving is to solid proof of His love (e.g. John 15:13). God had no obligation to give. Therefore, the fact that He did give so freely emphasizes the degree of His love. His act of love is an incredible, precious gift to all of mankind (Ephesians 2:8)!
- HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON – Meaning the only one of His kind; unique, special (John 1:14,18; 3:21). It is not that God had no real attachment to His gift. It was His Son and He has only one Son.
- THAT WHOSOEVER – The reason God loved and gave is because He had a specific purpose in mind (cf. 1 Pet 1:17-21). “Whosoever” means all men everywhere. It does not exclude poor or include only one class of people. It does not exclude a certain gender, age, race, or ethnicity. The word is all inclusive (cf. Acts 17:30). If God was going to give such a precious gift, then it was going to have the greatest impact possible. He did this with people in mind – people like us. It is remarkable to even fathom that God would do this to save a person like you or me.
- BELIEVETH – This word describes a decision and a way of life. It includes receiving Jesus and submitting in obedience to Him (John 1:12, 3:36). It is a continuous action, meaning that one must remain in that belief (cf. John 20:30,31). It cannot be said that one truly “believes” if one does not follow that Jesus taught. He taught that one must be “born again” (John 3:3,5) and “believe and be baptized to be saved” (Mark 16:16). If one is not baptized, then that one does not believe.
- IN HIM – What is the object of one’s belief? It is “in Jesus.” We must believe in Jesus or be lost. Morality or sincerity are not sufficient for salvation. Other “religions” are useless because Jesus is the exclusive way to eternal life (cf. John 14:6; 1 Corinthians 3:11). That is God’s plan for the world.
- SHOULD NOT PERISH – “Perish” means to be separated from God and His salvation (cf. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10). It is losing all that is good. It is the opposite of “eternal life.” Think of the two alternatives. Perishing is too awful for our comprehension! Believing is sensible and logical. It is sad that so many choose not to believe!
- BUT – This word presents the strongest possible contrast between “should not perish” and “have eternal life.” “Perishing” is the directional and were going. All may seem hopeless and hopeless, but …
- HAVE – Means “to possess or own.” We must not flirt with eternal life. God does not want one to go back and forth – having and losing – eternal life. It is his or her possession. If we have believed in Jesus, we have – right now – eternal life.
- ETERNAL LIFE – Abundant and unending life in fellowship with God in heaven (John 3:36; 5:24; 17:3). “Life” means more than existing. It addresses the quality of that existence. What God intends to give can truly be qualified as “living.” It will not be the “eternal death” (Revelation 20:14) but the exact opposite. “Life” is a key word in the Book of John.
I hope this word study has helped amplify your understanding of one of the most powerful verses in all of Scripture!
